The Guardia Civil has arrested two young males, ages 18 and 22, who were wanted on outstanding warrants for stealing from elderly individuals using the “hug method.” Yesterday, Wednesday December 31st, the Guardia Civil said that the arrest happened at a bank in El Campello.
On October 31st, Guardia Civil patrols from El Campello were looking for them because they saw someone acting strangely near a bank branch when they were protecting seniors while they were banking. When the suspect saw the police, they tried to hide behind a parked car. Then they got inside a car that was parked near to the bank entrance.
After checking the car’s details, officers found an active warrant from the Provincial Police Headquarters of Valencia. The warrant asked for the identification of the car’s passengers because they may have been involved in multiple thefts that used the “hug method.” So, they stopped the car and found out who was inside.
There were two males in the car, and it had a lot of garments and other things that may have been used to conduct crimes, like caps, a change of clothes, sneakers and a Halloween mask. The Guardia Civil took the car, which belonged to someone else, and put it in storage.
After checking police records, it was determined that they are both from the same family. The National Police in Cartagena (Murcia) wanted one of them for theft. The other had two outstanding warrants: one from the Juvenile Court No. 1 of Granada for fraud and another from the National Police in Sagunto for theft. There were also other warrants for finding his address and whereabouts.
Lastly, the two suspects were arrested and taken to the Duty Court of the Judicial District of Alicante. There, the court authorised their release on conditional bail.
